Tretinoin is a powerful acidic form of Vitamin A that has a profound regenerative effect on skin cells. Commonly it is prescribed in the 0.025% strength but it is available in 0.01% and 0.5%. Obagi Tretinoin is sold in cream form and is also sold by Obagi under the brand name Refissa. Tretinoin is also sold in gel form by other manufacturers.

Tretinoin Treatment for Age Spots and Acne

Tretinoin is used for the treatment of acne, including whiteheads and blackheads. The Obagi website mentions in a footnote that Tretinoin is intended for the treatment of acne vulgaris, which is cystic acne characterized by multiple types of disruptive and potentially scarring outbreaks.

Obagi Tretinoin works by accelerating the production of skin cells resulting in fresh skin being made which propels materials from clogged pores.

Less Certain As Treatment for Wrinkles

The skin rejuvenation properties mean that on some sites tretinoin is touted as a treatment for wrinkles but with and extended treatment time of several month because for wrinkle reduction apparently it can take a long time to see noticeable results.

For some reason Obagi does not promote tretinoin specifically for treating wrinkles, although tretinoin used to supplement three Obagi treatements as discussed below.

Tretinoin as Part of Obagi Nu-Derm System

Obagi’s Nu-Derm system is designed to change skin at the cellular level by stripping away damaged layers and instigating regrowth of healthier skin cells to replace them. The Nu-Derm system consists of sixteen products used throughout a five-step process. Sometimes Obagi Tretinoin is prescribed for use during the Nu-Derm process for additional treatment of acne-marred areas.

Ogabi’s Condition & Enhance Treatment with Tretinoin

The Condition and Enhance is another Obagi system that uses Tretinoin . It is designed to be used in conjunction with other dermatological procedures to enhance their results such as dermal filler, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser treatments, Botox and cosmetic surgeries. It works by penetrating the skin and promoting faster exfoliation and regeneration of new skin cells.

Obagi ELASTIderm Décolletage System

To treat the often neglected skin on the chest and neck Obagi developed the ELASTIderm Décolletage treatment system. It consists of two products only, Obagi ELASTIderm Décolletage Skin Lightening Complex and Obagi ELASTIderm Décolletage Wrinkle Reducing Lotion.

Both products are formulated specially designed to address the spotted and sun-damaged skin in the chest and neck area. The wrinkle reducing cream is designed to increase elasticity and add collagen. The skin lightening formula is to reduce brown spots and promote even skin tone.

During the ELASTIderm Décolletage treatment Obagi tretinoin might prescribed by the overseeing physician to assist both these products in promoting collagen growth and suppressing the growth of cells related to pigmentation. Obagi Tretinoin is sold as an Obagi-branded cream or gel or as the Refissa Tretinoin Emollient Cream brand.

Uses and Potential Side Effects of Tretinoin

The prescribing physician will provide the treatment plan with Tretinoin for each patient. Typical reported treatments can be for up to 9 to 12 weeks. And it may take 6 to 9 weeks before results are visible.

Redness and flaking of the skin has been reported after the first three weeks of use. According to the product insert, this is normal and the patient should continue treatment as prescribed. Exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided and usually patients are advised to use a sunscreen and moisturizer during treatment with Tretinoin.

FDA Warning: Tretinoin Should Not Be Used Surrounding Pregnancy

Tretinoin is not FDA approved for use while pregnant and should not be used by women who are trying to get pregnant or are nursing.

In addition to flaking and redness some patients have reported experiencing headaches as a potential side effect. Reducing frequency or amount of product use has been effective in reducing this side effect.
